MIGUEL GOMES: «WHAT I TRY TO SHOW IN MY FILMS IS THE REAL WORLD, BUT BEARING IN MIND THAT IN THE REAL WORLD THERE IS ALSO FICTION. THAT’S WHY I TRY TO COMBINE BOTH WORLDS».

For Miguel Gomes, cinema is freedom. A place where the dreams of his characters become reflections of an enclosed reality and, at the same time, a space where the everyday becomes the impossible and vice versa. And for this, the Portuguese director always invites the audience to immerse themselves in his films and become part of them.

We could say that Miguel Gomes already has two or three masterpieces behind him, but that would be somewhat arbitrary. To do him justice, the impact of seeing one of his films in a cinema should not be measured or catalogued. His cinema is ecstasy and freedom and for this reason, in 2023, he is being honoured at the 61FICX with the Award of Honour.

Also, in this podcast, recorded in Toma 3, Miguel Gomes gives us a preview of what we will see in his next project, Grand Tour. «I finished it a week ago and it can be summed up very simply: man escapes from woman; woman chases man». A love story or the opposite in which we will cross several Asian countries with the starting point in the year 1917.

As a farewell, Miguel Gomes explains that «some of his films are like a travel diary in which fiction is capable of fictionalising the images themselves». After all, that’s what his films have always been about; breaking down shots and reflecting on what happens when we turn a real image into a fictional object.

All the honours of the 61st edition of FICX for an unrepeatable director.
